Arjun: The verse are Brihadaranyak 6/4/18 and 6/4/13 I have read Shankar bhasya by Swami Madhavananda and didn’t understand these verses and if you accept the 11 Upanishads they will go against vedas as they say soul and god are one but vedas say different and if you say vedas are not spoken or made by humans then can you explain to me rig veda 1:1 they praise agni? Is this god or rishi speaking the knowledge?
Swami Ram Swarup: All eleven upnishads have been written by Rishi-munis based on eternal knowledge of Vedas which emanates direct from God. So, there is no way to say that the said upnishads are against the Vedas.
Actually, the comments on said upnishads may be against the Vedas, because comments are often given based on self-made sects/paths. Now, I explain meaning of Brihadarannyakopnishad 6/4/13.
(Ath+Yasya+jayam+aartvam+vindeit) i.e., Ath = thereafter; Yasya= whose; Jayam= wife; Aartvam= a woman in her courses; vindeit = is known.
That is, the man when knows that his wife is in her courses. (Ahatvasaha+Trayaham+kanse+na+pibeit) i.e., then his wife should wear new clothes for three days and should not take water and food in bronze utensils.
(Enaam+naha+vrishalaha+na+vrishalee+uphanyaat) i.e., no sensual man or woman should touch the said woman.
(Triratrante+aaplutya+breeheen+avtaatyeit) After expiry of three nights, his wife should manage to make charu (in Hindi- food grain prepared for offering in Yajyen)from barley.
(saha+yaha+ichcheit+putraha+mey+shukraha+jayeit+vedum+anubruveet+sarvum+aayuhu+iyaat+iti) i.e., now, whosoever desires that his son should be learned of Vedas and gets age of 100 years then they should prepare kheer (dish of rice prepared by boiling rice in milk) from rice.
It should be mixed with ghee. The said prepared dish should be taken by both i.e., husband and wife. (janyitvai+ishvarau) then both would definitely be able to get the said son.
So, the meaning of another shloka quoted by you is also based on ved mantras. In the shloka the upnishad has mentioned word =”Mashaudanam” i.e., Mash=urad ki dal; should be cooked along with rice. The word is not “Mansaudanam”. How can a rishi can advise to take mansaudanam i.e., flesh along with rice. Our culture is being ruined. We must be alert about it. In this connection, I would advise that we require listening of Vedas from learned acharya to follow it. Then only can the darkness of ignorance be destroyed. Study of only comments on shastras and upnishads are misleading us.
Vedas tell about Traitwad whereas Madhavacharya promotes Dwaitwad. Dwaitwad is against eternal knowledge of Vedas.
In Rigved mantra 1/1/1/, meaning of Agni is God and not fire. In Vedas several meanings of Agni are given i.e., fire, God, learned of Vedas etc. According to the ved mantras, the correct meaning of agni is considered. That is, in the said mantras, i.e., “Agnimeeday’ means I desire Agni. Which agni?
Answer- Agni who is our Purohit i.e., Protects and holds the universe. At the time of final destruction, as well as after creation, you see, the corporal fire does not protect/hold the universe. The said divine quality is possessed by Almighty God alone. Based on the said views, rest of the meaning of mantra is as under:-
Rigveda mantra 1/1/1 is as under:-
“ Agnimedey Purohitam Yajasya Devam,
Ritvijam Hotaaram Ratandhaatamam .”
(AGNIM EEDEY) I am desirous of God , (PUROHITAM) ‘Puraha’ i.e., ‘Puri’ like Janakpuri, Vikaspuri etc. So, this entire universe is a ‘Puri’. (HITAM) means one who wishes welfare i.e., holds, cares, nurses, protects. So, God is our Purohitam i.e., He only takes care providing with all comforts, nurses us with food etc., and protects us always. That is why, Purohitam is also the name of God.
(YAJASYA DEVAM) who gives us all the knowledge to perform Yajyen and (RITVIJAM) means whom we worship in all seasons. (HOTARAM RATNADHATAMAM) i.e., God holds uncountable wealth, gems, gold and unlimited divine pleasure, power of giving salvation etc., etc. Yet, the God is above all. Hotaram means He blesses us with all the comforts, goods, wealth etc.
