Parul: Dear Guruji How to learn the four Vedas, please guide.
Swami Ram Swarup: In this regard also, I paste my relevant answer-
Vedas tell several divine qualities of Guru. First of all he must be the learned of Vedas and Ashtang yoga philosophy. He must have control over his five senses, perceptions and mind. Guru means he who preaches but as far as spiritualism is concerned, there remains only one guru but still preaches or good talk can be heard and collected from anywhere, if it is based on Vedic knowledge. You see, Sri Ram had one guru named Guru Vasishth. But he listened to preach of Rishi Vishwamitra, Agastya Rishi and others as well. So, in spiritualism there remains only one guru from whom disciple takes deeksha and is called dwij.
Without guru/teacher, nobody can gain knowledge. This is a fundamental law of nature that knowledge is gained when it is given by someone. That is why Vedas state that first guru of four Rishis of unsexual creation is Almighty God Himself from whom the knowledge of Vedas emanates and is originated in the heart of four rishis. Thereafter the knowledge is spread by Rishis traditionally. So guru is essential as per Vedas, but Vedas state that he must be learned of four Vedas and ashtang yoga Philosophy. The ancient Rishis also wrote books i.e., six shastras, upnishads, Bhagwad Geeta etc., but they wrote books which were totally based on Vedas.
Gyan diye bina gyan nahin hota isliye gyan leine ke liye vidwan acharya/guru ke paas jaana ek anadikaal se chali aa rahee parampara hai jissey toda nahin ja sakta. Jaisa kee Samved mantra 744 mein kaha- Hey Parmeshwar! Mujh se pehley mere acharya nein aapkee stuti kee thee. Ab mein kar raha hoon. Atharvaveda mantra 1/1/2 mein kaha- “Acharya Uphootaha…. i.e., Arthat acharya ke nazdeek baith kar Ved vidya suno.
There are four Vedas:
1. Rig Veda – gives knowledge of science, matter of the universe like sun, moon, air body etc., etc.
2. Yajurveda – gives knowledge of all the deeds and duties to be performed by men or women, students, leaders, king, agriculturist etc., etc., etc.
3 Samveda – gives knowledge how to worship God who gives peace and long happy life etc. In this way, details of Yoga philosophy, qualities, supreme deeds and nature of the God are also given.
4 Atharvaveda – gives details of God, medical science and details of medicine etc.
Actually in four Vedas there is unlimited knowledge. Yajurveda mantra 40/8 says that God is everywhere, is Almighty, formless, devoid of nervous system, purest, away from sins and away to face any result of any karmas (deeds), knows every soul, knows what is in everyone’s mind, no body has made God, but God creates universe, has given the eternal knowledge of four Vedas and always gives the said knowledge at the beginning of every universe to know the science and deeds to all concern. Similarly four Vedas say about God that God is an omnipresent, omniscient, formless, beyond imagination and beyond calculation.
Anonymous: A lady friend of mine wants to chant 1.25 crores of Om Namay Shivay. She can do around 3,000-5,000 per day. But the question is if she continues it at all times? Please explain according to Vedas
Swami Ram Swarup: Reciting Om namah shivaye is not mentioned in Vedas, please. So, I cannot comment on it. In Yajurveda mantra 40/15, it is mentioned that “Om” is the best name of Almighty God to do the jaap.
