Prakash Chandra: Namaste Ji I am confused between the characteristics of Jiva and Atama?
Please explain clearly the difference between the two and their characteristics and function within self. I am having trouble understanding the two. Very much appreciated for your time and knowledge. Thank you. Prakash.
Swami Ram Swarup: This is to be known perfectly that there are some words like jeev, jeevatma, atma. Jeev and jeevatma means soul who is alive matter. Souls are many and take living bodies based on their previous lives’ deeds i.e., bodies like human-beings, animals, birds etc. Now, atma word has two meanings. In some places, atma means jeevatma i.e., soul and in other cases, atma means parmatma i.e., God. Now, those will differ from each other. The answer is that where the divine qualities in ved mantra or shloka are being mentioned relating to Almighty God then atma means God and where qualities of soul have been mentioned then meaning of atma will be taken as soul. Therefore, it is necessary to listen to Vedas, shastras etc., from learned acharya to know divine qualities of formless, Almighty God who creates, nurses and destroys the universe along with qualities of souls. As mentioned above, souls are many, God is one and God never takes birth like soul.
