Varun: My question is in reference to Atharvaveda mantra 1/14/1 “ A good wife should establish herself permanently in her husband’s house just as mountain firmly establishes itself on ground. Does that mean girls can’t have careers of their own? And also are Veda against music and dance?

Varun: My question is in reference to Atharvaveda mantra 1/14/1 “ A good wife should establish herself permanently in her husband’s house just as mountain firmly establishes itself on ground. Does that mean girls can’t have careers of their own? And also are Veda against music and dance?
Swami Ram Swarup: Career means to follow the eternal religious path. Vedas are eternal. You see, Mata Sita, Draupadi, King Janak’s guru Bal Brahmcharini Gargi and several other ladies adopted the path of eternal Vedas i.e., they did the pious deeds of family affairs/moral duties according to Vedas and they made their life duly filled with divine pleasure. They enjoyed long, happy life in all circumstances. So, the enjoyment which is been realized related only to physical charm and materialistic environments actually pinches all human-beings yet they show themselves as if they are enjoying a lot.

Secondly, When a man or woman follow the Vedic path which makes them to do only pious deeds as a result they surely have faith in each other which is a base/firm foundation of happy life. You see, a man does hard work and has to go here and there and several times out of station but his concentration is always connected to his home. Similarly, a lady goes to the market, several places and even out of station and sometimes to her parent’s home in urgency but her concentration becomes like a mountain which is firmly established in a place. So, tell me now what type of career you want to state?

Vedas are against music and dance but of that category which inspires and spreads sensuality and bad habits resulting in break of brahamcharya of students and others who are the foundation of a nation. So, we must all try to stop such music and dance which is destroying the future of our youngsters and thus destroying future of the nation.

S: My arranged married got broken because of mischief by my cousin. We are very upset because of this. Please advise.
Swami Ram Swarup: Such much ye dukh ki baat hai ki aap ka rishta toot gaya. Aap ke mata pita ko himmat nahin harni chahiye aur unke ghar jakar unhe sachchai batanye aur ladke ke mata pita ko yeh samnhanye ki jeevan ka samandh to aapkee ladki se hai aur jab tak parents jeetey hain unsey hai. To kripya aap kisi aur ki baat ko sunkar yeh rishta mana na karein. Kuch manneeye purush saath jaakar unhein samjheinyegey to weh mann jayenge. Ishwar sey Roz prarthna bhi karni chahiye ki who maan jayein.

Chanting Gayatri Mantra

Gayatri Mantra is in three Vedas please, i.e., in Rigveda, Samveda and Yajurveda. Samveda is sung when chanted, other than while performing Yajyen. So, Gayatri Mantra may also be sung.

Singing can be done anytime because God knows the pious ideas of anyone and He awards the result accordingly. Gayatri mantra can be chanted even without singing since it occurs in Rigveda and Yajurveda also, which are not sung. Secondly, Gayatri Mantra must be chanted by heart for getting more benefit. That is, it should be chanted by way of pranayaam. When we inhale and stop breathing within us then for such time, till we have stopped breathing, the Gayatri Mantra must be chanted. Then we must release the breath slowly, outside, and after releasing the full breath, we must stop the breath outside the body and during such period we must recite in heart the Gayatri Mantra by heart and the action must be repeated.

However, I would suggest that such practice must be first learnt personally from an Acharya. Secondly, when we sit on meditation on any suitable aasan then we must concentrate on Agya charka i.e., between the eyebrows and then we must repeat the Gayatri Mantra with the meaning of each word. This is the best way of meditation. I have written detailed comments on Patanjal Yog Darshan- Part I and II and have also described meditation therein, especially in sutra 3/1. I will advise you to study the book please.
